Kolender v. Lawson

The Kolender decision struck down the California law because it required a person to produce "credible and reliable" identification at the request of a police officer. The net result of this holding was that California simply deleted the provision referring to "credible and reliable identification." California, like other states, retained its disorderly conduct law requiring persons to account for their presence and identify themselves to a police officer whose suspicion is aroused.
